Danger on the Waterfront

Asa hurt himself down at the Chattanooga waterfront while playing in the water that cascades down the steps toward the river.

He was pretty upset about it. But after a couple hours of recovery time, he stopped worrying about the blood and started showing off his wound to everyone he saw. I told him I'd blog about it to get the news out to more people.

Gender lesson from a 5-year-old

Author's note: I had to come back and intentionally misspell a certain word in this blog post to reduce traffic from nasty people searching for pictures. :-( It should be fairly obvious... The number 3 is substituted for the letter E in 2 places.

My sons interrogate visitors mercilessly in their quest for knowledge about them. My friend, Keith, was their latest victim. Keith was doing some carpentry work for us a couple of weeks ago, and Ezra (5 years old) was hanging around asking him a bunch of questions. Keith later recounted some of the highlights from his conversations with Ezra...

Wanting to make sure Keith understood gender as clearly as he did, Ezra explained to him that only boys have p3nis's.

"Girls have something else," he continued.
"I know because I've seen my mom naked..."
"It looks like this..." (makes some sort of hand gesture)
"But I forget what it's called..."

No doubt, this conversation had to be making poor Keith uncomfortable.

But the most invasive question came when Ezra asked, "Do you get disappointed when you see other people's p3nis's?"

Keith struggled to keep from laughing, carefully explained that no, he did not, and then quickly changed the subject.

I don't know what the boy was thinking... My best guess is that he developed this assumption because of a conversation he and I had had about why we can't be naked in the front yard. I think I explained our need for clothes like, "Well, nobody wants to see you naked. That's why we wear clothes. They don't want to see it." So I guess he took that and assumed that people must get disappointed when they see you naked? I don't know...
